Raindance Science performed a risk analysis in terms of structural fire protection and smoke management. The structural response to fire was analysed, identifying risk zones and mitigation measures.

Furthermore the fire strategy was assessed pointing out possible improvements in order to guarantee the structural integrity of the building and to safeguard the life of the occupants.

The Banco Macro Tower in Buenos Aires, Argentina is a 30-storey building with a total surface area of 53,000 square metres. Raindance Science performed a smoke management study for the atrium, and for the auditorium and parking lot, located in the 2nd and 3rd lower ground of the building.

The study combined methods based on empirical correlations, zone models and simulations of computational fluid dynamics.

The project was based on smoke management study for the atrium of the mall where there was not enough extraction capacity.

Review of fire safety in the Paulista tower, currently being developed by Cyrela Paulista of Brazil. Life, fire safety and structural safety of the building has been reviewed. The fire safety of underground parking was analyzed in detail, and a "Fire Design" was produced at high density considering parked vehicles. The analysis was intended to provide overall direction and recommendations for building designers.

CLIENT: ALARKEN SA

ARAKUR is a luxury hotel, resort and spa in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.
Designed according to standards of sustainable architecture, this unique building comprises a five-storey, primarily composite steel structure over a two-storey reinforced concrete structure with a combination of stone, plasterboard and wood finishes. Apart from 131 bedrooms and suites, a restaurant and vast spa areas, ARAKUR also boasts an ample (> 10m high in places) events room for conventions and receptions.

Raindance Science International conducted a general Structural-Fire Safety Analysis of the design, with in-depth analysis of focus areas, such as those of high fire risk or significant consequence of structural damage. A performance-based structural-fire analysis of unique design features such as the events room, resulted in simple recommendations that will ensure the integrity of the surrounding structure for any eventual fire. The heat transfer to several critical structural components was also studied, as was the general layout and partitions between different sections of the building and between the building and its exterior parking areas, resulting in both performance-based and international best-practice recommendations throughout.

The Westin Hotel is emblematic of the city of Lima with 301 rooms, 30 stories high, 7 basements and the largest convention center in the city which needed an innovative and trendy fire solution. For our strategic alliances, Engineering Services developed a fire protection and design criteria.

After developing an analysis of fire behavior in height, (4.000 m), which included oxygen-enriched rooms, we proceeded to sustain the level of protection required for this type of risk, which convinced Marriott to install an oxygen-enriched room and a system of fire prevention and control according to this new type of risk, maintaining Marriott’s level of protection standards worldwide.

Independent research work, commissioned by Arup, the only job considered as official comment on the press conference organized by NIST in the presentation of the report of the collapse of WTC 1 & 2 (June 23, 2005). The work includes a thorough analysis of potential fires using the whole range of research methods and computer models coupling these results to a complete analysis of the structural behaviour which led us to the prediction of the collapse of the buildings.

We took the commission of the law firm of Gennet, Kallmann, Antin & Robinson, PC (New Jersey) to proceed with the analysis of the collapse of WTC-7 (2003-2011).

The work includes a thorough analysis of potential fires using the whole range of research methods and computer models coupling these results to a complete analysis of the structural behaviour which led us to the prediction of the collapse of the buildings.

Fires in altitude have a different behaviour than those at sea level, the flame is higher thus growth rate is higher; this has the potential to complicate when oxygen is added to a room, in this sense the Marriott and Westin hotels hired an investigation in order to analyze the potential level of risk in this type of scenario. This work was done with our strategic partners at the University of Edinburgh, burning 4 mockup rooms in the city of Puno.
